Domain name tips and hints
Some useful advice to get you started on the path to picking a great Domain Name that suits your business. Click the title for more info.
- Keep your domain name short
-
A short domain name is important because it:
- is easier to incorporate into logos and marketing
- makes it easier to spell and find for your customers
- makes it easier for you to spell to customers over the phone
- makes a better brand
- is more easily recognisable
- Make it relevant
-
It's best if your domain name can be derived from your company name. However, in your search for a domain name, don't give up if you can't find a domain that matches your exact business name.
Find functional names, names that describe your uniqueness and that express an emotion or attitude.
- Check the archives
-
Watch out for domain names that have been trashed and banned from Google or other search engines. What happens to search engine spam sites? Google bans them from their index. So if you purchase a site that has been banned, it can be difficult to get Google to put it back into the index, no matter how great the site is that you put on it.
Make sure you visit the Internet Archive and look up any domain name that you are buying on their “Way Back Machine” to see what kind of sites have been on it.
- Who is your target audience?
-
Aim to get the domain that has the most relevance in your market or country. The worldwide population are accustomed to .com, or .net. Domains ending in .com.au however, show an Australian focus.
Some domain names can sound weird and possibly suspect. If you want to appeal to an international audience, .com is the way to go.
- Watch out for trademarks
-
Trademark laws are designed to distinguish the goods and services of one trader from those of another.
If the holder of a similar domain name to yours trademarks their combination, it could severely damage your brand and threaten your domain name. Be sure to check with IP Australia before registering a domain.
- Avoid ambiguity
-
Humans understand word meaning with a level of sophistication that search engines such as Google don’t have. Avoid clever phrases unless they are really on target and completely unambiguous.
If you break your domain name down to just its keywords, will it 100% accurately represent the topic of your site?
