Taking that first step and moving your business online can be a daunting prospect for many business owners. This guide serves to give you an idea of how much to set aside for your website budget. Please note all prices here exclude GST.

Getting started

So you want to build a website? First off, you'll need to ask yourself what it is that you are hoping to achieve.

If you are looking for a basic web presence that captures the look and feel of your business, then a budget of less than $1000 is not unreasonable.

If you are wanting to use your website as a means of increasing sales or generating leads, then realistically $1000 is just not going to cut it.

Typical project costs for various websites:

• Small information based websites - approximately $800 - $2000
• Larger information based websites that require detailed design, content and extra functionality (such as a forum, social networking site, product catalogue) - approximately $1500 - $4500
• E-commerce based websites (such as a shopping cart or payment system) - approximately $2000 - $6000
• Very large sites with a large amount of content requiring design work, coding or advanced customisation can exceed these estimates relative to their size or the quantity of work requested

Extra Stuff

After deciding on the look, content, functionality and feel of your site, you will also need to take care of the extra expenses.

• Purchasing a domain name is a one-off expense that you won't have to think about for at least another 2 years. Webedge can purchase your domain name for you for $30-40 for 2 years.
• Webedge can setup your domain name for you for $70

My Web Hosting packages start at a very competitive $10 per month. This entitles you to 5 email addresses, 3 FTP accounts, 500MB of web space, and 2GB of monthly bandwidth! If you require more than this just let me know during our meeting.

Be sure to set aside a minimum of $500 to optimise your website for Google and ensure it meets all Web Standards.
